Asobo Studio’s A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of two orphans, Amicia and Hugo, who are on the run from the Inquisition and the Black Death terrorizing 14th century France. It’s a grim narrative that’s full of ominous sequences and gnarled out rat infestations that swarm around as a main puzzle mechanic, and it uses the emotional pull of every environment and set piece to trace the ups and downs of a teenager who is left to care for her 5-year-old brother. Its linearity makes it more of a stealth affair than an action-adventure soap opera, but by choice. Every maze, backdrop, companion, and smattering of alchemy is used to let the world unfold around you — analyzing the links between innocence and resilience, and how hope will find a way to blossom in the horrors of tragedy. It’s a feat that is held back by predictability, but it’s one that will forever earmark A Plague Tale as a gorgeous rarity in emotive storytelling.

A Plague Tale: Innocence might not set your world on fire, but it damn sure will make you seriously think about your relationship with your siblings. Telling the tale of the teenage Amicia and her toddler brother Hugo as they flee from the Inquisition and man-eating rats, it’s gritty as hell and doesn’t pull many punches, with one-hit deaths that really makes you feel like Amicia is being put through the wringer as there’s not much room for error. Although you don’t really get the quiet moments that the game really needs to make Hugo and Amicia stand out as siblings, it’s a great chill Sunday evening game to play thanks to its linear structure and relatively easy puzzle-based gameplay. “Marvel’s Spider-Man is special, if for no other reason than that it’s the closest a video game has come to capturing what it feels like to be everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. It’s exhilarating to step off a skyscraper and hear the orchestral score begin to swell, only to crescendo and level out as you start swinging towards your next objective; there’s never a moment in the game’s 20-hour run-time where you don’t want to be flying through the air. You’re constantly unlocking or discovering tricks that Spidey is known for pulling off in the comics–like firing out a web from both shooters to slingshot yourself through a hanging pipe–that make traveling from point A to point B the most thrilling part of the game.”

Mario Tennis started to feel predictable the last couple entries, but Mario Tennis Aces gives the long-running sports series a welcome shot in the arm. As ever, it’s a collection of the Mushroom Kingdom’s finest volleying back and forth on cartoonish courts, but the new special shots shake things up. See, the special shots bring a new strategic element to the proceedings, as a well-placed slam can literally break the opponent’s racquet. But if they manage to block it, then you’ve wasted a heap of your energy for nothing. It really adds a lot to the game, plus a neat single-player adventure helps deliver some extra fun outside of the thrilling multiplayer showdowns. Read extra details on https://thedawnofgames.com/.
